Can I Really Keep My Resume Confidential?

by Stephanie
(Los Angeles)

I’m afraid to post on Monster or one of the other job boards because I’m afraid my employer will see it and I could get fired. I know you can post confidentially, but does that really work? Can I make all my past employers on my resume confidential s they can't figure it out?

Manually Keep Your Resume Confidential
by: John

Hi Stephanie,

I hear this concern quite a bit and have a couple of recommendations for you.

The biggest mistake that people make with posting a confidential resume is that they'll click the "confidential" button (which does hide your name and most recent employer), but then will cut and paste their entire resume (including their name, address and phone number) into the resume section. If you want to maintain your confidentiality, be sure to take your name off your resume that you post. The same is true if you upload a Word doc of your resume -- purge the identifying information before you upload.

Regarding the employers, if that is a concern, you can certainly "cleanse" the name of the most recent companies you worked for as well. For instance, instead of listing the company name for your employers, take out the name and replace it with a description such as "Large Entertainment Company" or whatever best applies for the description. Be sure to change it in Monster AND on your pasted or uploaded resume, just as you would change your name as we described above.

I hope this helps. Good luck!
