My Company Won't Provide Employment References

Help! I’m in the final stages of getting a job: I’ve interviewed three times, the company has done a background check and now they want to check my references. The problem is, the last company I worked at for the past 6 years says it’s their HR policy to only verify dates of employment and not allow my former supervisors to give me a reference. Without these, it’s likely I won’t get this job…or maybe the next one!!! Please let me know what you think I should do.

I spent quite a bit of time during my job search cultivating my employer references on LinkedIn and am planning to use those references when I'm asked for them.

Unfortunately, more and more companies are instituting a policy like this. Here are some possible work-arounds:

- If you have a colleague or manager that you are closer with, ask for their cell phone number. They may be willing to provide a personal reference outside the scope of work.

- Reach out to former co-workers who may now be at a different company but who know your work.

- If you worked with any consultants or vendors at your organization who knew your work, ask them if they would be willing to be a reference for you.

- Proactively ask for references from people who know your work and who are connected with you on LinkedIn.

In situations like these, your network can really help. Hopefully you have stayed in touch with people that you have worked with in the past -- at this company or a former one. Remember, three to five references is enough. Be sure to check out the "Job References" information on this site; you can find it in the Navbar.
